Day 29: Sun 29 Sep – Tournus to Mâcon, 39km; total ride: 704km

Awoke to a fine and sunny day, which from the inside of the room looked quite warm. 9 to 28 deg with a cool blustery headwind.

As the ride was quite short today, we could take our time over the motel brekky, some cereal, bread and a croissant, washed down with more coffee than I normally drink in a week. About 0858h we rolled down the hill back into Tournus to get some departure photos of the town and Abbey from the bridge. It was here that I realised the chilling effect of the headwind necessitated another layer, so I threw on the spray jacket.

We then found the riverside bike path heading south and off we went. Not much to see along the way, just the Saône flowing past with a boat or barge occasionally. We found a trash and treasure market at Fleurville (which had hardly any flowers) and had a wander through it. Nothing that would temp me to carry it back to Lyon. The local Chateau, which is now a Motel, looked nice from the outside. We pushed on, stopping occasionally for photo opportunities but nothing to write home about. Eventually pulled into Macon before midday.

Bob needed a caffeine fix, but it was far too late in the day for me, so I just hung around and listened to a band playing at the bar/restaurant/café. They were pretty darn good.

We then went for a ride down to the river where there was a local food and wine festival going on. Tried some free samples but not enough lunch for a couple of hungry cyclists. Along the river further there was a kebab joint which looked ok so that was lunch.

This took us past our nominated checking in time of 1400h so that’s what we did next. Nice old motel close to the centre of the city with a lockup undercover park for the bikes. The afternoon was spent wandering around aimlessly enjoying a surprisingly pleasant city. At the food and wine festival we were just in time to sample the scrambled eggs that half a dozen chefs had cooked on a monster frying pan. The purpose of this event is to showcase the local food and wine and to give the city a sense of community. You can see by the number of volunteers and organisers, all decked out in their traditional dress, it does this very well. The scrambled eggs were superb.

By about 1740h we’d both had enough for the day, even though it was a relatively easy ride today. There are always chores to be done too, washing clothes is a daily one, as I don’t carry too many spares.

Arrived home about 48 hours after checking out of the hotel Lyon, a little bit trashed from the lack of sleep and sore from sitting in cramp...
